THE TOUR
The West Country Golf Tour is the most prestigious handicap adjusted amateur golf tour in the West of England.
Founded in 2016 for golfers socially mobile enough to be acquainted with existing tour members, its commitment to the growth of the game amongst friends and friends of friends is unwavering. For those whose jib is cut in a likeable manner tour membership is mandatory.
The season is long and tough. Tense negotiations with spouses and rota administrators to secure playing rights mark the qualification phase for a series of sanctioned events from Spring to Autumn. Courses from all over the West of England are considered for the honour of being a host venue. Only those with availability on the selected dates make the grade.
Golfers win prize money based on finishing positions in sanctioned events. The ingenious Modified McLaughlin Factor X is applied to boost the available purse, rewarding performance against larger fields on tougher courses. Every shot matters (excluding post-blob shots in Stableford events). Every pound counts. Players' prize money is calculated and automatically totalled by a powerful spreadsheet crafted by WCGT Treasurer and Spreadsheet Mage, Matt Johnson. Total season prize money is the basis for the players' standing on the season-long Order of Merit.
Highlights of the WCGT schedule include the Clifton Gin Club Invitational, The Atlantic Super Links and the most prestigious, historic, invitation only amateur major championship, The Jacket. The season climaxes at the pressure packed Tour Championship. Only when the final putt is drained will the victor emerge to claim the coveted Brunel Sceptre, and the title of Champion Handicap Adjusted Golfer in the West of the Year.
